Column

Angola’s first
time participation in the World Cup received worldwide
coverage and generated a good deal of positive
publicity about Angola, which too often suffers from negative
news stories. And it is especially gratifying that the Angolan
team played so well losing by one goal to Portugal and tying
Mexico and Iran. The players and coaches deserve our heartiest
congratulations.

Chairman's Corner
by Simeon Moats
|
This
is my first note to the members of the U.S.-Angola Chamber of
Commerce since I was elected to
succeed Filippo Nardin as Chairman of the Board of Directors.
Filippo’s commitment to the Chamber was exemplary and we are
grateful that he will remain with us on the Board to lend his
experience and continuing support.
Moving forward through 2006 and into the years ahead, the
Chamber faces new challenges. Angola continues to develop
rapidly, the bilateral relationship between the US and Angola
continues to change, and the role of the private sector in
Angola will continue to grow. I believe that the U.S.-Angola
Chamber of Commerce has a role to play in all of these.

Annual and Board
Meeting
The Chairman of the Board of
Directors, Filippo Nardin, opened the Annual Meeting with a review
of the highlights of his term in office during the past three years.
These included the continuation of the very successful working group
meetings, which had become an important forum for periodic
discussions of developments in Angola. In addition, a working group
had been convened in Luanda for the first time and had generated a
positive response.
Other highlights were an increase in
membership, the holding of two Gala Dinners, and the first ever
business symposium in Luanda in 2005. The establishment of an office
in Luanda, headed by Liliana de Sousa, marked an important milestone
in the development of the Chamber’s presence and activities in
Angola. Looking at the remainder of the year, Nardin noted that the
Chamber planned a trade mission/business symposium in October, a
major conference on Angola in Washington, and a third Gala Dinner in
Luanda.
