Portugal, Angola Sign Agreement On Climate Changes
Luanda, 04/25 – A memorandum of understanding
for co-operation in the area of climate changes and the Clean
Development Mechanism (CDM) under the Kyoto Protocol was signed
Thursday between the Angolan and Portuguese Environment ministers. The Angolan Urbanisation and Environment minister, Diakumpuna Sita
José, and the Portuguese minister of Environment, Territory Arrangement
and Regional Development, Francisco Nunes Correia, signed the document.
The agreement outlines as objectives the foment of the co-operation
between both countries in the area of climate changes, through the
stimulus of developing and implementing the Clean Development Mechanism
(CDM), adopted in December 1997 in the United Nations Framework
Convention. The memorandum comprises activities in this field, through the
identification of opportunities to carry out project activities by the
public and private sectors of both countries, as a valid strategy to
foment sustainable development in Angola and facilitate Portugal in the
accomplishment of its international commitment in the ambit of the
Kyoto Protocol. Therefore, the development and implementation of activities and
projects will be encouraged, as well as make available information to
facilitate the closeness between private and public agents of both
countries. Speaking at the event, the Portuguese minister underlined the
importance of signing the memorandum, which to him will increase the
mechanisms of implementing the Kyoto Protocol recommendations, “in
which all actions should be engaged to resolve the problem of global
warming”. He added that the agreement will improve the cooperation between both countries and
peoples, promoting the exchange of knowledge, so as to resolve the problem of climate changes. On his turn, Sita José considered that this convention opens a new page
in the ambit of the co-operation between the two countries in the
environment sector. The Angolan official expressed total availability of Angola to
materialise this agreement, and he thinks that it will benefit both
countries. The meeting of the incumbent environment Ministers of the community was
divided into two segments, namely technical (from 22 to 23 April) and
ministerial (April 24) and included the holding of parallel meetings of
Water Department officials of the Portuguese Speaking Community
Countries (CPLP) member states and the meeting of focal points on
environmental education and representatives of environmental
associations.
Cefojor Upgrades Journalists on Electoral Coverage
Luanda, 04/25 – The Journalists Training Centre (Cefojor) promotes from April 29
to 30, at its premises, a workshop under the topic “Media and elections in Angola”, ANGOP
learnt this Friday from a note of the institution. The course aims at upgrading and equipping Angolan journalists, in view of a better
professional performance in mobilising and raising the patriotic conscience of voters, reads the
note. The document explains that the workshop will discuss “The role of the press in the
consolidation of democracy”, “Media in the electoral legislation”, “Strategies of electoral
coverage on radio, television and written press” and “The Portuguese, Brazilian and South
African electoral coverage experience”, among others.
StatoilHydro Produces 200,000 Barrels of Oil Per Day
Luanda, 04/25 - The daily production rate of StatoilHydro in Angola is of 200,000
barrels, an amount that corresponds to a tenth of the total national daily production, 1.9 million barrels/day. This information was made available to the press by StatoilHydro
Group`s executive vice president for international exploration and
production, Peter Mellbye, who is in Angola for contacts with partners
of the Norwegian company and Angolan authorities of the oil sector. The director, who gave this information at the end of a meeting with
workers of StatoilHydro in Angola, revealed that the firm`s
international production is of 475,000 barrels per day. At the moment StatoilHydro carries out its exploration activity in the
Angolan blocks 15 and 17, being the biggest non-operating companies in
the country and is among the seven most important oil producing firms
in Angola, together with Sonangol. The Norwegian firm also provides technical assistance to projects of Sonangol P&P in blocks 34 and 4/05. StatoilHydro currently operates in Angola, Algeria, Azerbaijan, Brazil and Venezuela.
Head of State Appoints Constitutional Court Installing Commission
Luanda, 04/25 – Angolan head of State José Eduardo dos Santos Thursday
in Luanda appointed a commission tasked with the creation of the
material, technical and legislative conditions for the functioning of
the Constitutional Tribunal. The commission is be coordinated by Rui Constantino da Cruz Ferreira, and includes Efigénia
dos Santos Lima, Francisco Queirós, Suzana da Conceição Inglês, António Agostinho
Santos, Onofre Martins dos Santos and a representative of the Finance Ministry. The installing commission has been given 90 days to complete its work,
counting from the date of the presidential dispatch, followed by its
revocation with the establishment of the court and nomination of its
judges, in line with the law in force in the country.
